Exquisite wooden mask, carefully hand-carved, intended to be worn by the Caretos during the celebration of the Fiesta de los Rapazes, has been created with the inspiration of the skilled local craftsman, Toze Vale.

This festivity takes place in the village of Ousilhão, located in the municipality of Vinhais, belonging to the district of Bragança, Portugal, specifically in honor of Santo Estevão on the days 24, 25, and 26 of December.

The Fiesta de los Rapazes features the active participation of the Caretos, who, with their pranks and teasing, roam the village causing chaos among the population after the masses.

The Caretos also carry out their traditional rounds in search of offerings, especially sausages.

During these festivities, both young and old, children and youth, wander through the streets adorned with quilted outfits with colorful fringes and hoods on their heads, complemented by the typical wooden masks that bring this unique tradition to life.

Toze Vale’s mastery is reflected in each carving, adding an artistic touch to the celebration that unites the community in this joyful and festive occasion.

ENGLISH
Witch sorceress mask from the Carnival of Tyrol in Austria, carved from hand-carved wood, presents a terrifying aspect with oval eyes of penetrating gaze, partially toothless mouth, pointed nose, and numerous wrinkles.

Alpine traditions are closely related to the figure of the witch, who embodies winter in its most terrible, diabolical, and evil aspect. Their attempts to clean the spectators’ shoes with a broom during the carnival parade are an attempt to put on a brave face in bad weather.

Good against evil, day against night, light against darkness, heat against cold. These antagonistic concepts are represented every year in the Tyrolean Carnival, which is celebrated from January 6th until Ash Wednesday. With lots of noise, terrifying masks called “”Larven,”” and different dances, the end of the long winter is invoked.
