ENGLISH
Mask of an indigenous person from the Maya culture of Mexico, crafted from hand-carved and polychrome wood, highlights the figure of a man with thick facial features and, atop his head, a jaguar with its mouth open showing sharp teeth and fangs, also accentuating the decoration of his ears.

The jaguar was the quintessential symbol of power for the most important figures, such as the ruler or the priests, as well as those linked to the supernatural, like sorcerers, and even the gods themselves, such as Tezcatlipoca.

The Maya used masks during public ceremonies, religious festivities, and even in the midst of battles. In this culture, they were objects of privilege or used as offerings to the deities.

They represent the supernatural union between the human and the divine, or the animal.

The Skull Mask, crafted in ceramic and hand-painted, is a distinctive element used during the celebrations of the Day of the Dead in various cities and towns across Mexico.

The Day of the Dead is a festivity deeply rooted in Mexican culture that pays homage to deceased loved ones. This celebration blends indigenous elements with Catholic traditions and is primarily commemorated on November 1st and 2nd, coinciding with All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day in the Catholic tradition.

Skulls, also known as calacas, and skeletal figures, especially the iconic Catrina, are recurrent elements in the ornamentation of the Day of the Dead. These representations are often festive and colorful, symbolizing death as a natural part of the cycle of life.

The Day of the Dead is not a somber celebration, but rather an opportunity to remember and honor loved ones in a joyful and respectful manner. This celebration reflects the belief that the deceased return temporarily to the world of the living to share moments with their family and friends.
