Impactful mask belonging to a Maya indigenous person from Guatemala, meticulously hand-carved in wood, stands out for the richness of its polychromatic colors.

Its features include eyes painted in black, a wide nose, and a generous mouth with well-defined lips.

In particular, the presence of a jaguar figure rising above the head stands out, as well as multiple symbolic figures surrounding the entire face.

Contrary to the erroneous belief of the colonizers, who thought that Maya masks were used as a disguise to hide the wearer’s personality, in Maya culture, this attire has a genuine meaning and a purpose rooted in their religious beliefs.

These masks, more than a simple disguise, serve as a visual and spiritual expression of the Maya worldview, incorporating deep symbolisms that connect the individual with their environment and ancestral beliefs.
