The Ngil mask of the Fang ethnic group from Gabon, crafted from hand-carved wood, is characterized by its heart-shaped face, with a broad forehead adorned with scarifications, linear and refined eyebrows extending into a long nose, oval eyes, and a rectangular-shaped mouth displaying chiseled teeth.

They are used in ceremonies and rituals associated with religion and spirituality.

Before being displayed, the masks are consecrated, and the dancer wearing them must observe sexual abstinence and respect prohibitions on consuming certain foods.

In the Fang ethnic group, as in any structured society, it was of utmost importance to maintain order through the use of masks.

In the Ngil secret society, the high initiate (Ngang), assisted by his attendants, would traverse the villages hidden behind the mask. Their action was primarily aimed at identifying individuals suspected of witchcraft or crimes.
